Основатель кинокомпаний American Zoetrope (совместно с Фрэнсисом Фордом Копполой), Lucasfilm Ltd, (также её председатель в 1971—2012 гг., включает в себя ILM) и Pixar. Больше всего известен в качестве создателя двух культовых франшиз: научно-фантастической саги «Звёздные войны» и серии приключенческих фильмов об Индиане Джонсе. Также прославился, как постановщик фантастической антиутопии «THX 1138» и лирической комедии «Американские граффити».
